UNDERPRIVILEGED ELDERLY
Being an elderly means: struggling to: get up in the mornings, get to shops, get to church, getting to the hairdresser, have difficulties driving!
BUT no one actually realize, that not all elderly persons problems begin and end with a illness but actually starts in the morning waking up in a cold room with dirty or no bedding at all, feeling the hunger pains, do not have shampoo to wash hair never mind going to a hairdresser, don’t have any hot water, don’t have R10 to go to the shop to buy a bread, cant even afford bus fair never mind struggling to see where to drive, in their own car, don’t have a problem getting to church as they do not have any clothes to wear to church, do not need to worry how to get to the bank as they do not have any money in the bank, BUT does have a problem getting sick by standing on the street corner in the sun or cold begging, get swore at, and then maybe get robbed two, and the money that they do collect during the day they have to pay over to the landlord, getting into your cold tinny little room with minimum electricity or non at all eating dry bread or if you are lucky a tin of fish.
Then you also find the elderly that does receive a pension, which if its government pension its limited, which means that their rent is covered, but what about their food, clothing, medicines etc. And that is where Fifty Plus centre comes in, we support elderly who struggles to survive, not only by giving them a food parcel but by giving them support financially and morality showing them the respect they deserve, people of today do not respect their elderly anymore, that is why we find so many elderly left behind, their children and family abandoning them, left to survive on their own, yes many of them if not all of them has a lot of experience in life as well as work experience and yes if it was maybe 10 years ago they would be able to fight and work their way out of the bad situation they are in, but unfortunately they are 10 years older, who employs someone at the age of 60 or even 50, we also see that people at the age of 40 cant find descent paying jobs anymore, companies do not realize that getting older means more experience, but the working world has changed so much over the last couple of years that companies would rather employ people without experience, because it means paying them a lower salary, they also do not want to employ people over a certain age as they believe that their productivity will go down, yes that is maybe true and it is their company and we can not tell them who to employ and who not, but we can help the ones that is struggling.
Underprivileged comes with different circumstances. We at the Fifty Plus Centre are trying to change the fortune of these individuals and their run of bad circumstances by doing the following
We help the elderly with food parcels, clothing, toiletries, blankets, etc.
Providing a basic food parcels per elderly couple or an individual elderly is costly and we need sponsors. A food parcels with just the bare essentials is costing us R1000.00 per elderly per month. The reason why it stays on a R1000 per elderly couple or per elderly individual is because we study each and every person that we help, getting involve in each and every way, where with some elderly couples we are able to only buy a R1000.00 food parcel because they do not need medicines or special food, where we also have elderly couples who we need to buy medicines and special food for it would cost us R2000.00 per elderly couple, meaning that they are then considered as costs of an individual.
We have many elderly that we help who needs special food, example, whole-wheat bread, fish, parsley, more vegetables than others, etc. as some of them has illnesses like, Diabetes, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, etc and as per their diet even if we are the only help that they do get, we do not see it as a way to keep the food parcels as cheap as possible but as healthy as possible for each individual as everyone’s needs are not the same.
This particular project entails feeding existing and homeless elderly, as well as supplying of toiletries, clothing and food to the homeless.
We have 40 individual elders and 25 elderly couples, who are in need of this assistance; therefore, we are imploring you to adopt one elderly to be subsidised for one year.
If your budget allows, we kindly ask you for the yearly cost of aid which is
R12 000-00. Then we don’t have to come back to yourselves every month, for the following month, when you are so busy with your own schedule.
It is also difficult for the needy elderly when they are aware of how quickly a month goes by, if they will be able to have that assistance again, the following month. Hence, a couple months in advance, relieves this type of insecurity and pressure on them when it comes to the end of each month.
So therefore adopting a elderly,
* For one year costs R12 000-00,
* For 6 months costs R 6 000-00,
* For 3 months costs R 3 000-00,
* For 1 month costs R 1 000-00.
